15 Strongest Grass-Type Pokémon, Ranked (2024)

Summary

  • Grass-type Pokémon can make powerful additions to any trainer's team, especially when complemented by secondary types.
  • Rillaboom, Venusaur, and Sceptile are highly regarded and powerful Grass-type Pokémon with high stat totals.
  • Kartana is the most capable Grass-type Pokémon in battle, boasting high physical attack and defense stats, as well as speed.

Grass-type creatures are everywhere in the world of Pokémon, and plenty of them can make powerful additions to any trainer's team. The first pocket monster listed in the Pokédex is the Grass-type starter Bulbasaur, which cemented the importance of the Grass-type classification in the series. Additionally, this common type is now a staple component of the typical starter choice triangle in games. Many highly regarded and beloved Pokémon belong to this classification, such as Chikorita, Celebi, and Leafeon, just to name a few.

Pure Grass-type species like Sceptile can be useful, although not all of them are groundbreaking. Where this type's strengths lie is when complemented by secondary types, including Bulbasaur's final stage, Venusaur, and the defensive force Ferrothorn. Grass-type Pokémon are generally unlikely to top any list of the best types overall, but they still bring plenty to the table and can be some of the most overlooked possibilities.

There are many ways to classify "strongest" in the world of Pokémon. These Grass-type Pokémon were selected based on the stat total of each while taking special movesets and other features into consideration.

Every Unused Pokémon Type Combination

Each generation of Pokémon games adds new critters with ever more bizarre type combos. But these type combos have never existed, some for good reason.

15 Tangrowth (Pokédex #0465)

Grass-Type Pokémon

15 Strongest Grass-Type Pokémon, Ranked (2)

Tangrowth easily ranks among the best pure Grass-types in the series, although its stat spread is complicated. With 100 HP and a fantastic 120 Defense stat, Tangrowth excels against physical attacks. Sadly, its Special Defense and Speed are terrible, both coming in at 50, and its HP is not high enough to make up for it.

Tangrowth's stat total is only 535, and because Tangrowth is slow, trainers must hope that the opponent does not use a super-effective Special move, as this may strike the Pokémon down in one hit. If it can survive, though, this Tangrowth's offensive stats let it defeat many opponents with ease.

14 Exeggutor (Pokédex #0103)

Grass/Psychic-Type Pokémon

15 Strongest Grass-Type Pokémon, Ranked (3)

The Coconut Pokémon, Exeggutor, as well as its Alolan counterpart, are extremely slow, with Speed stats of only 55. This makes some sense for a sentient, walking tree to not be very quick, yet it can put Exeggutor at a disadvantage in battle. It can quickly make up for this downside, however, with an incredible Special Attack stat of 125 and 95 in both HP and Attack, for a stat total of 530. Defense and Special Defense are both moderate, but as long as it hangs on long enough to make its attacks, it can be a strong Grass-type.

13 Leafeon (Pokédex #0470)

Grass-Type Pokémon

One of Eevee's evolutions, and therefore a huge fan-favorite, Leafeon is not a bad little fighter in the Grass-type catalog. It only offers a stat total of 525, but has a strong Attack at 110 and Defense at 130. The Defense is good, as Leafeon only has an HP of 65, yet if it can take down its opponents quickly enough and defend well, it is a formidable fighter. Leafeon also has the Leaf Guard ability that protects it from status ailments such as Sleep, Poison, and more.

12 Rillaboom (Pokédex #0812)

Grass-Type Pokémon

15 Strongest Grass-Type Pokémon, Ranked (4)

Though most of its stats are very good, particularly its main attack which comes in at 125, Rillaboom has an unfortunate Special Attack stat. While this is limiting, Rillaboom can confidently hold its own with a stat total of 530. Its Speed is already decent, and then its signature move, Drum Beating, lowers the enemy's Speed stat, making Rillaboom even faster by comparison. Before its first move in a matchup, Rillaboom may have to withstand a strike, but it can do so fairly well with its reasonable bulk. It may not be the most popular in the series, but Rillaboom is very powerful.

11 Venusaur (Pokédex #0003)

Grass/Poison-Type Pokémon

Undoubtedly one of the most beloved Grass-type starter Pokémon, Bulbasaur is sometimes considered an "easy mode" starter in the Kanto games. On top of having the Special-focused powerhouse Grass/Poison-type, the evolved Venusaur has an even 100 in both Special Attack and Special Defense, with everything else in the low 80s for respectable bulk, giving it a stat total of 525. Attacks like Giga Drain are excellent for damage/restoration, Sludge Bomb for Poison damage and potential status afflictions, plus a Mega Evolution (where applicable) to make it an even more imposing combatant.

10 Gogoat (Pokédex #0673)

Grass-Type Pokémon

15 Strongest Grass-Type Pokémon, Ranked (6)

Gogoat may not be well known as a powerful combatant, but it is strong nonetheless. Its Speed stat is lackluster at 68, and its Defense is abysmal at 62, but its other stats are relatively well-rounded, letting it take strikes and deal them back effectively and a stat total of 531. Attack and Special Attack stats for Gogoat both sit right around 100, and Gogoat's access to great Physical moves gives it an additional offensive boost. Additionally, Gogoats HP is phenomenal at 124, which makes up for the lack of Defense stats.

9 Sceptile (Pokédex #0254)

Grass-Type Pokémon

15 Strongest Grass-Type Pokémon, Ranked (7)

As one of the better final forms of a Grass starter, Sceptile can defeat many opponents with relative ease. This is largely due to its exceptional Speed stat of 120. By moving faster than most foes and using moves that benefit from its high Special Attack, Sceptile can strike quickly and decisively, making its stat total of 530 more effective. Even once engaged in battle, it can hold its own, especially when throwing its Mega Evolution into the mix. This Pokémon accesses Special Grass-type moves like Leaf Storm, Giga Drain, and Energy Ball, making Sceptile terrifying to face. As long as it can out-speed enemies, it can dominate.

8 Tapu Bulu (Pokédex #0787)

Grass/Fairy-Type Pokémon

Being a guardian deity of Ula'ula, it is understandable that Tapu Bulu would be a powerful Pokémon. Although it does not have the typical appearance of the Grass-type, this Grass/Fairy-type commands plants to do a lot of its work for it. Even still, Tapu Bulu holds a strong Attack of 130 and Defense of 115, with a stat total of 570. Tapu Bulu's only real weaknesses are its 70 HP and 75 Speed, but with plants restraining opponents before they can reach Tapu Bulu, it can take as long as it wants to get there and back off when needed.

7 Wo-Chien (Pokédex #1001)

Dark/Grass-Type Pokémon

15 Strongest Grass-Type Pokémon, Ranked (9)

Wo-Chien is one of the Legendary Pokémon introduced in the Pokémon Scarlet & Violet games for Generation 9. It is covered in dark-green mossy material mixed with leaves and moves as though it were a giant snail. With an overall stat total of 570, it is a powerful creature, and although a lot of those stats are primarily used in its Special Defense of 135 and Defense of 100, this just means it can hold its ground while it slowly takes down its competition.

6 Virizion (Pokédex #0640)

Grass/Fighting-Type Pokémon

Like Wo-Chien, Virizion holds a lot of its stats in Special Defense, yet it does a better job of evenly laying out the rest of the stats across Attack, HP, and Speed for a stat total of 580. The mix of Fighting-type with the Grass-type allows Virizion to have some stronger skills at its disposal as well, which can be misjudged by those looking at its graceful form. With a basic Attack stat of 90, it isn't the heaviest hitter around, but also certainly not the weakest.

5 Iron Leaves (Pokédex #1010)

Grass/Psychic-Type Paradox Pokémon

15 Strongest Grass-Type Pokémon, Ranked (10)

Though looking remarkably similar to Virizion, the Paradox Pokémon, Iron Leaves, is a unique case with the Grass/Psychic-type combination. Originally appearing in the Pokémon Scarlet & Violet video games, using its Paradox status, it can have skills across many types available to it, including Normal, Grass, Fighting, Dark, Psychic, Bug, and Electric. Its stat total is 590, with 130 of that being fully placed in Attack. It does have a slightly weaker Defense and Special Attack, but its other stats make up for these deficiencies handily.

4 Shaymin: Land Forme (Pokédex #0492)

Grass-Type Pokémon

15 Strongest Grass-Type Pokémon, Ranked (11)

The Land Forme of Shaymin may look harmless, but enemies should not underestimate this Mythical Pokémon. Its stats all have the same value, which is better than average, with a stat total of 600. While this means Shaymin does not excel in any one area, it also means that it is not as vulnerable as many other Pokémon. It can take both physical and Special Attacks equally well and deal damage effectively, regardless of the category. It does not have access to many moves through leveling up, but if trainers are willing to use TMs, they can remedy this lack of options. With the right attacks, Shaymin can show the true strength it possesses.

3 Celebi (Pokédex #0251)

Psychic/Grass-Type Pokémon

The time-traveling Mythical Celebi from the Johto region is a force to be reckoned with in a battle. Like Shaymin, Celebi's power is no surprise, as merely being classified as such a rare Pokémon ensures that its stats and move pool will back that reputation up in some form.

Celebi is perfectly rounded, with straight 100s in every category for a stat total of 600. Mix that in with its Special-oriented Psychic/Grass dual type, its Natural Cure ability to wipe away any status afflictions, and access to a moveset that offers equal parts offense, stat boosters, and restorative moves, and it's no wonder Celebi is a star among its Grass-type peers in the Pokémon games.

2 Zarude (Pokédex #0893)

Dark/Grass-Type Pokémon

15 Strongest Grass-Type Pokémon, Ranked (12)

Zarude is a vicious-looking Dark/Grass-type that was introduced in Generation 8 as what is aptly described as a rogue monkey. The dangerous appearance of the Pokémon is not just for show either, with a powerful stat total weighing in at 600, with 120 of those being all placed in the Attack skill. It has a lot of HP and Defense as well, with its Special attack being the only area to suffer. Of course, with a strong enough base attack and a Speed of 105, not having a strong Special is not so bad.

1 Kartana (Pokédex #0798)

Grass/Steel-Type Pokémon

15 Strongest Grass-Type Pokémon, Ranked (14)

Outside Legendary/Mythical, the Alolan Ultra Beast Pokémon Kartana is arguably one of the most capable Grass-type creatures in battle. With a superb stat total of 570, this Pokémon has a beastly 181 Physical Attack, 131 Physical Defense, and 109 Speed. Kartana is an immense Physical force in combat, with the caveats being its abysmal Special Defense and subpar HP. Kartana also has the advantage of having the highest max CP of any Grass-type, totaling 5037. If players keep it away from Special Attack-focused opponents, Kartana is a speedy heavy-hitter with attacks like Leaf Blade and Smart Strike at its disposal. When used strategically, Kartana can easily be the most powerful Grass-type Pokémon.
