Can you use mismatched AirPods? ›

If your AirPods are different generations or different models, you won't be able to get them to work together. Before buying a replacement AirPod, check to make sure it's the same kind as your other AirPod.

A2032 and A2031 are the model numbers for the 2nd gen Airpods. Each side, gets its own model number. A2032 for the left Airpod, and A2031 for the right Airpod.

With AirPods (2nd and 3rd generation) and AirPods Pro (1st and 2nd generation), each AirPod also has its own serial number, printed on the AirPod itself. If you need to send in your AirPods or charging case for service, refer to the primary serial number, printed on the case lid.

You can use 1st Gen AirPods with a 2nd Gen case (both wired and wireless will work). For other AirPods, you need to use a case that is the same model. This ensures compatibility. Be careful when using someone else's case to charge AirPods.

Every original AirPods box comes with a serial number, so make sure you head over to the Apple serial number checker page and type in the serial number of your wireless earbuds to see if they are genuine or not.

Some things to keep in mind when using Apple's serial number check. Consider the serial number: It is possible for a counterfeiter to use cloned serial numbers. For example, the counterfeiter takes the serial number from a 100% legit pair of AirPods and prints that on the box for their 100% non-legit pair of AirPods.

The model number can be found in the same way as the serial number. So make sure your AirPods are connected to your iPhone and go to Settings > General > About > Airpods. The model number is also listed on each Airpod itself. You'll find the fine print on the underside of the earpiece, near the stick.

Those aren't serial numbers; they're model numbers. A2031 is a second-generation right-ear AirPod; A2032 is its left-ear counterpart. (Thanks to Ilya Shapiro for getting my right and left straightened out!) A2083 and A2084 are AirPod Pro model numbers.

The serial number on the charging case is essential for identifying your specific AirPods model. Your connected iPhone, iPad, or Mac can also display the serial number of your AirPods.

Counterfeit AirPods generally lack the necessary integration with the Apple Ecosystem, so they won't be compatible with “Find My” or other Apple services tied to authentic Apple products.

If you see an alert that says "AirPods Mismatch," then you might have mixed up your AirPods with someone else's AirPods. You can try to get your AirPod back from the person who might have it.

As we said, it's possible to charge your AirPods in a different case. As long as the case is compatible with your AirPods, there won't be a problem. Yes, AirPods can only charge with a case. But there's no problem with having multiple cases either.

If the AirPods are still linked to the previous owner's iCloud account, they may be able to see the AirPods' location in the "Find My" app. Resetting alone doesn't unlink them from the account - the owner needs to manually unpair them.

You can connect two pairs of AirPods to your iPhone with Apple's audio sharing feature. Once connected, you can control your volume independently for each set of AirPods. When you're ready to disconnect one pair of AirPods, you can do so from the Control Center.

Though AirPods cannot connect to two different devices simultaneously, they do offer seamless device switching with other Apple devices.
