If you own an iPad, chances are you want to protect and/or accessorize it with a case. With so many generations of iPad in existence today, ranging from the iPad mini 1 to the iPad Pro 9.7, it can be difficult to know what size case to buy for your device. To buy the correct size case, you will need to measure your iPad by hand or use the model number to find the dimensions online.

Method 1

Finding Your iPad’s Size By Model

  1. 1

Find the model number on the back cover. A quick way to know the model of your iPad is by looking up its model number. Turn your iPad over to the back cover to find the model number in small print. The model number starts with the letter A followed by 4 digits.[1]

  2. 2

Find the order number under Settings. If the model number on the back of your iPad is illegible, you can find another model number, also known as the order number. Under Settings on your iPad go to “General” and then “About.” Next to the word “Model” you will see a combination of numbers and letters starting with the letter M. Search the model number in Google to determine the model of your iPad.[2]

  3. 3

Search the model or order number online. Once you have either a model or order number you can search this number in Google to identify the model of your iPad.

    • If you have the model number starting with the letter A, you can also look for it on this list of iPads on Apple’s site at https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201471 to identify the model of your iPad.
  4. 4

Find your iPad’s dimensions on Apple’s website. Now that you know the model of your iPad, you can go to Apple’s “Compare iPad models” page at https://www.apple.com/ipad/compare/. Below each iPad model you will find the dimensions under “Size and Weight” and the screen size under “Display.” Use these measurements to help you buy the correct size case for your iPad.

    • If you have an older iPad model that is not listed on the web page, go ahead and proceed to Method 2 to get the dimensions of your device by hand.

Measuring Your iPad by Hand

  1. 1

Lay your iPad on a flat surface in a vertical orientation. The shorter side of the iPad should be parallel to your body and the screen should be facing upward. Make sure your iPad is free of accessories so that you can accurately measure its dimensions using a ruler or measuring tape.

  2. 2

Measure from the left edge of the iPad to the right edge. Make sure the zero of the ruler is lined up with the outer edge of the iPad to get an accurate measurement. Apple considers this measurement as the width of the iPad.[3]

    • On Apple’s website the dimensions are written in both inches and millimeters so it could be useful to make note of your measurements in both units.[4]
  3. 3

Measure from the bottom edge of the iPad to the top edge. The ruler should be parallel with the longer side of the iPad for accurate measurement. Apple considers this measurement as the height of the iPad.[5]

  4. 4

Hold the ruler up vertically to measure the iPad’s depth. To get the iPad’s full dimensions you will need to know its depth or thickness as well.[6] Bring the iPad to the edge of the flat surface so that you can easily line the zero end of the ruler with where the iPad meets the flat surface. Measure from here to the top of the device.

  5. 5

Measure from the screen’s bottom left corner to its top right corner. Make sure you are measuring from the screen’s corners rather than the iPad's outer corners. The ruler should be placed diagonally on the screen. On Apple’s website the iPad screen size is measured in inches so make note of your measurement in inches.[7]

    • Do not include the inactive frame or bezel around the screen in your measurement. This is how all screens are measured whether its a smartphone, computer or television.[8]

Purchasing a Case for Your iPad

  1. 1

Get a sleeve case if you take your iPad on the go. Sleeves are a great way to keep your iPad protected while traveling or commuting without adding too much extra weight. However, sleeves will only keep your iPad protected when not in use.[9]

  2. 2

Buy a thicker case for extra protection. Look for a thicker and/or tougher case that protects the back cover, corners and sides of your iPad. A thicker case may increase the weight of your iPad.

    • You can find such cases that also have a cover that protects the screen while its not in use. [10]
  3. 3

Get a case with accessories you will need. Some accessories that can come with a case include a pen holder, a keyboard, or something that allows you to prop up your iPad while using it.[11]

  4. 4

Go to an Apple store or browse Apple’s online store. Because your iPad is an Apple product, it may be easiest to check Apple’s website at https://www.apple.com/shop/ipad/ipad-accessories or go to an Apple store because they will have products made to fit your device. If you want a wider range of options from other brands, you can check other online retailers or tech stores.

    • If you are shopping for a case online, make sure to check customer reviews to ensure it meets your needs.
    • Going to a physical store rather than shopping online gives you the opportunity to bring your iPad with you and ask an employee to help you choose your case.
  5. 5

Read the case label and/or description. Make sure it is suitable for your iPad model and screen size. If the model and/or screen size is not mentioned, look for the dimensions that can fit in the case.

    • Make sure you are aware of the store’s return policies so that you can return the case if it does not fit your iPad or your needs.
