Growing a lawn on your own can be tricky. Firstly, you need to decide the right type of lawn grass based on your climate and landscaping goals. Then provide it with the best conditions to flourish. Mowing the lawn and weeding it regularly are some of the routine jobs to maintain a lush green lawn. In this blog, we will highlight some of the most common types of lawn grass in Pakistan.
- Korean
- Fine Dhaka
- American
There are various kinds of turf grass varieties in Pakistan. Over the years, three of these lawn types have been most successful in Pakistan and are, therefore, quite commonly grown. Let’s discuss these lawn types in more detail.
Korean
Belonging to the group of Bermuda grass variety, it is locally called as Korean grass. One of the biggest advantages of growing Korean grass is that its carpet is thick and creates a lush green lawn.
Korean grass doesn’t need to be mowed extensively to maintain a pretty look. About ½ an inch to 1 inch of mowing is required. During the summers and in the monsoon season, the grass flourishes the most and must be mowed more frequently. If it is not mowed as and when needed, it is susceptible to scalping, which shears the grass blades and exposes the stem tissues, causing the grass to turn brown or yellow.
The growth of grass is quite slow and it takes longer than other varieties of grass to have a lush green effect. Korean grass is well-suited for colder climates and doesn’t require full sun for 6-8 hours a day. It can grow well under shades of a tree or a wall. If you walk on a Korean grass lawn surface, it can feel a bit rough on the feet. The grass can dry out and the leaves turn yellow, when the weather turns frosty. But this is a blessing in disguise.
As when the grass becomes dry, it is mowed, cut and dethatched. So, when the new grass grows it is green and even. If you do not want the Korean grass to fade out in the winter season, then you can keep it looking lush green using amino acid and potassium treatment. Most homeowners prefer keeping it natural during the cold months and wait for it to grow back after dethatching. The price of Korean grass is PKR 15 to 20 per sq ft.
Fine Dhaka
This also belongs to the Bermuda grass variety and is locally known as Fine Dhaka grass. It is one of the most commonly used lawn grass in Pakistan. Its leaves are broad and it grows rapidly. One of the major reasons for its popularity is that it is almost half the price than that of American grass. You can buy Dhaka grass at PKR 8 to 10 per sq ft. Because of its drought-resistant ability and lush green effect, Fine Dhaka is also commonly used in parks.
American
American grass belongs to a different grass variety. It is a bit more expensive than Fine Dhaka and Korean grass because of the fact that the effects of the frost and cold season shows up late on American grass and it stays green for some more time, while its counterpart varieties show signs of wilting and yellowing of leaves. However, it requires 7 to 8 hours of sunlight and frequent watering, but it is more lush and green with less weeds as compared to the Fine Dhaka variety. American grass is most commonly used in large grounds and stadiums where it is important to keep the lawn lush green all year round. It gives a fine and even look as compared to the other grass varieties. The cost of American grass is PKR 20 to 25 per sq ft.
So, these were some of the most commonly grown lawn grass in Pakistan. If you are short on time and don’t want to spend hours in weeding and mowing the front lawn, then go for an artificial turf that looks exactly like real grass but requires zero maintenance. However, you must decide between natural vs. artificial grass based on various factors.
