You might think that candied oranges would be overpoweringly citrusy and maybe a bit too sweet, but the balance of flavors is right on with these sweet treats. They can be served as is or as a garnish for co*cktails, like this chocolate orange martini.

If you’ve never made candied citrus before, you definitely should give this recipe a try. They aren’t as difficult to make as you might assume from the looks of them. But that’s the great part about them, too. They look complicated and amazing.

What You Need to Make Chocolate Orange Slices

The ingredients list is extremely short for these chocolate orange slices. It’s really just oranges, sugar, and chocolate. Can’t be any easier than that.

Orange–Always use bio or at least organic oranges. Wash them thoroughly before slicing, to remove any residue or pesticides. Some oranges have a thicker rind. The rind can be more bitter. It’s best to find oranges with a thinner rind.

Sugar– Regular white granulated sugar mixed with a bit of water.

Dark chocolate – For this recipe, we used Ghirardelli dark chocolate. You can use any brand you want, but make sure it’s high-quality so it melts easily and smoothly.

Wash the oranges well. I always use bio oranges so I know there aren’t any pesticides on the rind, since you’re going to be eating it. Cut the ends off the orange and discard them. The slice the orange into ¼ inch thick slices.

In a large pot over medium high heat, stir the water and sugar until the sugar is dissolved. Bring the sugar water to a gentle boil and add the orange slices.

Reduce the heat to low until it is just barely simmering. Any higher will cause the water to evaporate too quickly. Put the lid on the pot and simmer the oranges until they are translucent, turning them over at least once during cooking. It takes about 40-60 minutes depending on the size of the orange slices.

Remove the orange slices from the pot and place them on a wire rack over a baking sheet covered in parchment paper. This will keep the sugar from dripping and sticking to your counter or baking sheet. It’s very hard to get off. Reserve the liquid, this homemade orange simple syrup that can be used in co*cktails.

Cool the orange slices for at least 2 hours or overnight. They will harden as they cool.

When the oranges are completely cooled and hardened, you can dip them in the chocolate.

Melt the chocolate in a double boiler. Dip the orange slice into the melted chocolate so that half of it gets covered. Place it on parchment paper or a silicon mat to harden for at least an hour.

Tips for Making Chocolate Orange Slices

  • Use a wide-bottomed pot to simmer the orange slices in, so each one has its own space and is not overlapping.
  • I used dark chocolate with a 60% cocoa content. These Ghirardelli chocolate chunks are perfect. You can use a darker chocolate too if you want.
  • If you want an even prettier orange slice, dip them in granulated sugar or superfine sugar (caster sugar), before you dip them in the chocolate..
  • Sprinkle chocolate dipped orange slices with flake salt for a salty sweet snack.

Are Candied Orange Slices Good For You?

Seeing how these oranges are coated in sugar, I would go so far as to say they are good for you. They are a sugary treat that should be consumed in moderation. However, the citrus is packed with vitamin C and the peel is edible if you use the right oranges.
