It simply wouldn’t be Christmas without fruit mince pies.

In fact, they are generally one of the first things that you see in the supermarkets as Christmas is approaching. There are so many varieties to choose from, but one thing is guaranteed.

There is NOTHING quite like a homemade traditional fruit mince pie.

Yes, it is easier to pick up a packet with your weekly shop, but once you have tried making your own, you will NEVER look back.

Nothing tastes as good and Christmas just wouldn’t feel right without the aroma of a freshly baked mince pie coming from the kitchen.

The great thing is that they are not even difficult to make. All you need to do is make up some pastry, add some fruit mince filling and pop in the oven.

Yes you can pre-purchase the pastry, but seriously for a little bit of extra effort I would absolutely recommend you to make your own.

The melt in the mouth pastry can not be compromised for something store bought and you absolutely won’t regret it.

What’s In A Mince Pie?

I have been calling them fruit mince pies because we really don’t want to do a Friends Rachel and bake some beef mince pies. Whilst they would be tasty, they are really not what we are going for here!

The traditional filling for a mince pie is mincemeat.

You could make your own, but you can also buy a jar of heavenly fruit mince for a lot less effort.

The fruit mince is a delicious spicy preserve containing a mix of dried fruit, suet and fruit spices.

If you are baking only for adults, you could also add a touch of rum, brandy or cognac for some extra punch.

Don’t worry though if you can’t because they taste just as amazing without it.

What Cream Goes With Mince Pies?

Another totally awesome thing about these fruit mince pies is that you can eat them as they are, OR you can turn them into an actual Christmas dessert.

The mince pies taste amazing surrounded in a pool of single cream, or alongside some thick double cream.

Another alternative would be to add rum or brandy butter, or even just plain ice cream or custard.

Every single option will give a truly wonderful taste. You might need to try them all out to discover which is the best.

There is however no denying that a fruit mince pie eaten straight out of the oven by itself is pretty hard to beat!

How Long Do Fruit Mince Pies Last For?

Let’s be honest, fruit mince pies are best eaten fresh.

If I was to be really critical, I’d say they are best eaten within the first couple of days after baking.

However, they can easily last for up to a week in an air tight container. That is however very rare in my house as they usually disappear not long after they have been made.

When they are eaten fresh, the pastry still melts in the mouth and they do tend to dry out the longer you leave them.

But honestly, I don’t think it will be a problem because once you have made them you are really going to be struggling NOT to go back for more!
