There are actually A LOT of advantages to edging your lawn! Lawn edging serves both a practical and aesthetic purpose. Giving the intersection of your lawn with your driveway, walkways or landscaping elements like garden beds a clean cut will save you a lot of time through the summer, and make your yard look tidy and well kept.
Why Edge a Lawn?
If left unchecked, grass quickly grows into cracks over the edges of pavement, cracks in walkways, and into landscape beds. Edging creates a cut barrier that prevents roots of grass from invading spaces it doesn’t belong. With good spring edging and keeping up with it as necessary, it saves time and makes your yard and landscaping look complete.
With manual or mechanical edge trimmers, an actual cut is made in lawn turf. This cut “edge” puts a distinct line between the grass and whatever it borders. A big advantage of edge trimmers is that they significantly reduce the need for trimming (weed-whacking) after cutting grass. It also eliminates the need for frustrating trimming in difficult spaces like along a fence.

Lawn Edging Equipment
Lawn edging is typically accomplished using one of three primary tools:
Manual Stick Edger
This simple tool is a workout, but effective. Similar to a shovel, a manual edger has a long handle with an end blade, like a spade, that is usually a half-moon rounded shape. Most manual edgers have a serrated or smooth wheel at the end that you roll along to cut the edge path. These types of edgers work great along the driveway or walkways, but certainly works effectively around garden and landscaping beds as well. These tools are inexpensive and just take sweat equity to achieve clean edging.
Motorized Handheld Edger
With a similar design to a weed-whacker or trimmer, these motorized edgers take the work out of cutting the perimeter edges. They have a guide attachment for the blade, but do require the operator to hold the unit steady and direct the cutting blade. With some practice, these are a favored edge trimming tool that’s much smaller to use and store than the walk behind counterpart.
Walk Behind Edger
Walk behind edgers take the elbow grease out of edging by adding a motor to run the blade. These Cadillacs of edging are an easy way to get straight, clean cut lines around just about anything.
