Growing your own vegetables is a fun project for the entire family. Nothing feels better than being able to say, “I grew that!”
Here are five cold weather vegetable seeds that can be planted directly into the garden:
#1 Lettuce
There are many varieties of lettuce to choose from, all with their own specific flavor. Consider planting several different types for a salad full of color and texture.
#2 Peas
Once planted, peas require very little attention other than light watering and fertilizer. Harvest regularly to encourage production and you will be peas-ed with the results!
#3 Swiss Chard
A delicious leafy green, more tender than kale. Soak the seeds overnight prior to planting to hasten germination.
#4 Spinach
Rich in vitamins, spinach is grown very similarly to lettuce. Pick leaves when they reach the length you prefer.
#5 Carrots
The key to growing carrots is to sow the tiny seeds in shallow, well worked soil. Till down about 10-12 inches prior to planting to remove any rocks, roots or debris that would impede growth.
