Seven Layer Magic Bars (1)

Seven layer magic bars with not something I grew up with in my family. It’s just not something we normally made at Christmas time. We often made cream cookies, peanut butter balls or peppermint bark. A little secret! I personally don’t like seven layer magic bars because of the coconut but I was able to find an alternative when I made the turtle magic bars that don’t include coconut.

I know all of you love and went crazy for the magic bars that included caramel so much I thought I would give you the classic version by adding coconut. It’s such an easy bar to make. You are just adding layer over layer and then baking it.

What is different about these magic bars is that I made them with a shortbread crust instead of the graham cracker crust. I personally like the shortbread crust better and I think it gives it a nice little added crunch with extra flavor!

HOW TO MAKE SEVEN LAYER MAGIC BARS

INGREDIENTS:

  • Shortbread crust which includes unsalted butter, brown sugar, and all-purpose flour. This gives the bars a buttery, flakey crust.
  • Chocolate Chips: Melted goodness that make these extra decadent.
  • Pecans: Gives the bars a nice nutty, crunchy textures.
  • Coconut: Adds a chewy flavor to these seven layer magic bars. Can be substituted with caramel, like I did in these turtle magic bars!
  • Condensed Milk: This is what binds and holds the bars together.

Directions:

  1. First you are going to make your shortbread crust by combining the butter, sugar and flour together! Press it into your prepared dish, then bake it.
  2. Once it is baked, you will be adding your layers of chocolate, pecans, and coconut.
  3. Next you will pour the sweetened condensed milk over everything and bake again!
  4. Let you bars completely cool before cutting into them!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1/3 cup light brown sugar packed
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • pinch of fine sea salt optional
  • 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 1/2 cups pecans chopped
  • 1 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
  • 12 ounces sweetened condensed milk

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a 7×11 (2 QUARTS) baking dish with foil and spray with cooking spray, set aside.

  • In a large bowl cream the butter with the brown sugar until smooth with an electric hand mixer. Slowly stir in the flour (and optional sea salt) until combined. Press the mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Bake for 15 minutes until lightly golden brown.

  • Sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the crust, followed by the pecans, then the coconut. Pour the sweetened condensed milk over everything trying to cover the top as best you can. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown on top.

  • Let the bars cool in the pan completely. Once they are completely cool, cut them into bars and serve.

Notes

These bars are addictive, chewy, and soft! Chocolate is the predominant flavor. I used semi-sweet chocolate chips since we added even more sweet ingredients, but use the variety of chocolate chips you prefer.

You can even mix up the chocolate chips, or other toppings as long as you keep the same ratio.

These bars also cut better if cold. So if you want to refrigerate them overnight and then cut them, that would work too.
